Japanese Tea Cultivars with Asako Steward

Japanese Tea Cultivars with Asako Steward

Most Japanese teas are blended, but recently, single-cultivar teas have been gaining attention among tea enthusiasts. Each of these teas is made from a single cultivar grown in a specific tea field and finished as is without being blended. Like vintage wines, they offer a unique way to enjoy the aroma and flavour of each particular harvest.

Each cultivar has unique characteristics and in this session, UKTA Tutor Asako Steward will talk about the main cultivars in Japan and the reason why there are over 120 cultivars registered in Japan.

Learning about the cultivars helps us gain a deeper understanding of Japanese tea. In this session we will taste four main cultivars to understand their characteristics and help you find your preferred Sencha.

Included in the ticket price is delivery of 4 teas to taste during the event. Each of these is a Sencha, but made from a different cultivar. We will taste these teas during the session to compare and contrast the differences between them:

  1. Sencha from the Yabukita cultivar
  2. Sencha from the Tsuyuhikari cultivar
  3. Sencha from the Saemidori cultivar
  4. Sencha from the Koshun cultivar

These are very special teas, carefully sourced by Asako. We are delighted to host this very rare opportunity to compare the fine details of these sencha teas made from these important different cultivars. If you are a Japanese tea lover (and definitely if you are an aficionado), this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Numbers for this fascinating event are strictly limited so please do book as quickly as you can if you don’t want to miss it. Tickets will sell fast so if you’d like to join Asako do book NOW!
